Link Cosplay Jacket: Design Stage

Legend of Zelda

It’s too cold to go alone….
Take this!

I’m super in love with my A Study in Scarlet Caplet (McCall’s 7291), so as soon as I finished it I decided that I wanted to make something else out of that pattern, but I wasn’t sure what. Fast forward a few weeks and I’m sitting on the couch playing The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess and it hits me: M7291 looks like a feminine version of Link’s Tunic.

It was love at first thought.

I’m a terribly indecisive person, so I sketched up two ideas for what it might look like. The first one is based more on Twilight Princess and the second one on Breath of the Wild (although both would be in green).

Version 1

Twilight Princess Inspired

version 1Front:

  • Held shut by frog clasps
  • Very little decoration

Back:

  • No decoration

Belt:

  • Brown
  • Triforce on back

Sleeves:

  • Embroidery inspired by Minda’s helmet

Sides:

  • Slit up the side (show on version 2)

Version 2

Breath of the Wild Inspired

version 2Front:

  • invisible zipper all the way down the front
  • Embroidery taken from the blue tunic in Breath of the Wild

Back:

  • Embroidery taken from the blue tunic in Breath of the Wild

Belt:

  • Brown
  • Triforce on back

Sleeves:

  • Embroidery taken from the blue tunic in Breath of the Wild

Sides:

  • Slit up the side

Final Idea?

Of course, I haven’t even bought the fabric yet, so this is all subject to change.

Construction:

  • I think I’m going to go with a zipper up the front
    • I don’t know if the frog clasps will lay as neatly as I want them to.
  • The pattern has a collar, but I’m going to ditch that and make the shaped collar that I sketched up
    • It fits Link’s collar more closely, and will make it even more unique
  • I’m going to do a small slit up the side.
    • No more than four inches high, I think.
    • I haven’t decided yet if I’m going to lace them up or not. His always have laces, and a dark green ribbon would be pretty, I’m just not sure.
      • I wouldn’t do a bow – I don’t want to deal with loose ends – so I would just sew the ends out of the way.

Materials:

  • Outer shell
    • I want something similar in texture to the fabric I used for the other caplet (it was for suits), but in green.
    • I want it to be soft and drapey.
  • Inner shell
    • It definitely needs to be brown and will probably be either something silky or something of the same material as the outer shell

Embroidery:

  • The idea is to do the embroidery (by hand) in a shade of green that’s either slightly darker or slightly lighter than the material so its very subtle.
  • I think I’m leaning towards doing the embroidery for Version 2, because its probably going to be more recognizable.
