Orientation Week Blues

Work in Progress Wednesday

I had my college orientation this week, and I got a Wii U, so I’ve been busy and not doing a lot of crafts.

Knitting

Hyrule Warriors Scarf

I’m still plugging away on this. I got quite a bit done at my college orientation, and I’ll be working on it at the RWBY showing I’m going to tonight, so hopefully I’ll make some noticeable progress (the thread it so tiny!)

Spiral Cowl

I haven’t been working on this as much as I should – otherwise it would be done! – because its not as mindless as the Hyrule Warriors Scarf. But I’m almost done! Maybe this afternoon I’ll finish.

Sewing

I finished my Belle Bomber so you should check that out! And I finally got up decent photos of

Link Cosplay Jacket: Design Stage

Legend of Zelda

It’s too cold to go alone….
Take this!

I’m super in love with my A Study in Scarlet Caplet (McCall’s 7291), so as soon as I finished it I decided that I wanted to make something else out of that pattern, but I wasn’t sure what. Fast forward a few weeks and I’m sitting on the couch playing The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess and it hits me: M7291 looks like a feminine version of Link’s Tunic.

It was love at first thought.

I’m a terribly indecisive person, so I sketched up two ideas for what it might look like. The first one is based more on Twilight Princess and the second one on Breath of the Wild (although both would be in green).

Version 1

Twilight Princess Inspired

version 1Front:

  • Held shut by frog clasps
  • Very little decoration

Back:

  • No decoration

Belt:

  • Brown
  • Triforce on back

Sleeves:

  • Embroidery inspired by Minda’s helmet

Sides:

  • Slit up the side (show on version 2)

Version 2

Breath of the Wild Inspired

version 2Front:

  • invisible zipper all the way down the front
  • Embroidery taken from the blue tunic in Breath of the Wild

Back:

  • Embroidery taken from the blue tunic in Breath of the Wild

Belt:

  • Brown
  • Triforce on back

Sleeves:

  • Embroidery taken from the blue tunic in Breath of the Wild

Sides:

  • Slit up the side

Final Idea?

Of course, I haven’t even bought the fabric yet, so this is all subject to change.

Construction:

  • I think I’m going to go with a zipper up the front
    • I don’t know if the frog clasps will lay as neatly as I want them to.
  • The pattern has a collar, but I’m going to ditch that and make the shaped collar that I sketched up
    • It fits Link’s collar more closely, and will make it even more unique
  • I’m going to do a small slit up the side.
    • No more than four inches high, I think.
    • I haven’t decided yet if I’m going to lace them up or not. His always have laces, and a dark green ribbon would be pretty, I’m just not sure.
      • I wouldn’t do a bow – I don’t want to deal with loose ends – so I would just sew the ends out of the way.

Materials:

  • Outer shell
    • I want something similar in texture to the fabric I used for the other caplet (it was for suits), but in green.
    • I want it to be soft and drapey.
  • Inner shell
    • It definitely needs to be brown and will probably be either something silky or something of the same material as the outer shell

Embroidery:

  • The idea is to do the embroidery (by hand) in a shade of green that’s either slightly darker or slightly lighter than the material so its very subtle.
  • I think I’m leaning towards doing the embroidery for Version 2, because its probably going to be more recognizable.

The Gamer’s Week

Work in Progress Wednesday

We had some friends over last Friday for what we like to call a “crafty day” where everyone sits around and does their own craft and we chat and eat food. I got quite a lot of stuff done then and since its still my summer vacation, I’m still getting a lot done.

But I also started my first job yesterday (eight whole hours!) so that’s been keeping me busy (and sore).

Infinity Scarf

Legend of Zelda, My Tutorials, sewing

Jo Ann’s has fabric with designs from The Legend of Zelda now, so I decided I needed to make myself a scarf.

I think the scarf may have ended up just a little bigger than I intended, and if I were to make it again I’d fix that, but on the whole I really love this scarf and I get a lot of compliments whenever I wear it.

See the scarf on my Portfolio.

Making the Scarf

Materials

  • 1.5 yards of patterned fabric
  • 1.5 yards of complimentary fabric

Its a pretty simple pattern, all I did was cut two rectangles of each fabric (so four total) which measured 40 inches by 15 inches. Then I laid them out, right sides together, and sewed them up following a method a lot like this.

If you follow my book blog The Writing Crafter, you’ll know that I recently had thyroid surgery and in recovering from that haven’t been doing much. I’ve barely read, most of my blog posts are drafts that I scheduled and wrote before my surgery, and most of what I’ve done has been playing video games and texting.
